Woollen textile town in W Yorkshire, England;
population (1981) 87,500. St John's parish
church is Perpendicular Gothic; All Souls' is
by Gilbert Scott (built for a mill owner
named Ackroyd, whose home, Bankfield, is now
a museum); the Town Hall is by Charles Barry;
and the Piece Hall of 1779 (former cloth
market) has been adapted to modern use; the
surviving gibbet (predecessor of the
guillotine) was used to behead cloth stealers
1541-1650.
